Next (New?) Chapter

A liminal season is a season that is “in between.” It occurs when what has been can be no more, but what will be has not yet become clear. Community Church is currently in a liminal season. Some recall a former season (chapter) to which they would like to return. Others perceive something new on the horizon, and they are looking forward with hopeful enthusiasm. So which direction will we go? Who will decide? And how will we know we are moving in the right direction?

This Sunday we will be commissioned (co-missioned) to “witnesses” to the life, teachings, and way of Jesus in the world today. Allen Hilton, author of A House United, will be delivering a message inspired by Acts 1:1-9 (below). I do not know precisely what the message will be, but I have a sense of it given his title, “Acts 29.”

As part of our courageous conversation this Wednesday, we will explore together where we have been, where we are, and where be believe we are being called, both personally and collectively as followers of Jesus in the current world(s) in which we live. Between now and then, familiarize yourself with Acts 1:1-9 and Acts 29. Also, watch the clip below of The Legend of Bagger Vance with the following questions in mind: What was Community Church uniquely created to do? Have we lost our authentic swing? If so, where can we find it again?

Acts 1:1-9

1In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning 2until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4While stayinga with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This’, he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized withb the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
