We have a choice to make . . .
Americans today are deeply and often bitterly divided along political, religious, ethical, and cultural lines. We live in an information and technology age in which statistics, "facts," and language can be manipulated to support or distort vitally significant matters that daily impact our lives and the lives of those with whom we are directly and indirectly connected.
For many of us, our impulse is to tune it all out and absolve ourselves of personal responsibility with the false consolation that there is nothing we can do about the divisive national climate in which we find ourselves. For others of us, we have been deceived by the prevalent but mistaken narrative that we must clearly choose the party or group of people with whom we identify. All too often, those whose religious, political, social and ethical perspectives and commitments differ from ours are deemed either morally inept or, worse, corrupt. In turn, the persons, families, and communities that make up a nation founded on the principle of unity is left further fragmented and divided. But there is another way . . .
We have a choice. We can choose to believe that the conditions that divide us and our world are beyond repair, or we can choose to believe and act upon the reality that love, properly understood, is the most powerful force in the universe. The answers to the world’s challenges cannot be found in isolation, and we need not wait for an individual to arise now or in the future to show us the way. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for . . .
