A Wellspring of Wisdom
The story is familiar, but some of the wisdom that can be gleaned from it is not. Commonly referred to as “The Woman at the Well,” I invite you read John 4:4-34. What is this story about? The writers tells us that Jesus “had” to go through Samaria (John 4:4). The King James Version translates the sentence somewhat awkwardly, but with more intensity: “And he must needs go through Samaria.” Why was it so necessary?
Other questions to consider while reading the text include:
What is the primary purpose of the conversation and the Samaritan woman?
What is living water?
What does Jesus mean by the statement “my food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work”?
What other questions emerge in your reading of the text?
As the title of this week’s dialogue indicated, John 4 offers a wealth of wisdom for those who are sincerely in search of it. Together, through open and charitable dialogue, we will come away with a much richer understanding of the text and its relevance for us today. Let that be among our prayers this week!
