Hard Pressed

What a topic to begin with, huh? Just jump right in, Jacob!

Well, why not? If we are not currently undergoing some tensions and struggles in this season of life, we will at some point, right?

You’ve experienced it before . . . those times when you are under so much pressure it feels like you are caught in a vice? The kind of pressure that comes from living with tensions that are difficult or seemingly impossible to resolve?

In this week’s reading (Philippians 1:21—30), Paul discloses the tension he is experiencing between his “desire” to be done with his earthly assignments so that he can be “at home” where life is experienced beyond anything we can begin to imagine. The latter, he knows, is “much better by far.”

The tension Paul is feeling is not difficult to understand. He is writing from prison. And he is in prison because “living a life worthy of the gospel of Christ” means proclaiming in word and deed that the highest loyalty for those who are sincere about following the way and teachings of Jesus is often in direct conflict with what is generally accepted as normal, if not inevitable. In the words of Jesus, following his way leads to “trouble” (John 16:33).

And yet, despite his circumstances, Paul is able to experience hope and joy, and he exhorts others to follow his example.

With his context in mind, for tomorrow’s conversation, be thinking about the following:

(1) What is the gospel of Christ?

(2) What does it mean to live a life worthy of the gospel?

(3) Why does the gospel of Christ create tensions between our loyalties and commitments?

(4) Where are hope and joy to be found in the midst of suffering?

Looking forward to tomorrow and the kickoff of another season of rich and meaningful Bible studies and dialogues!!
